The more educated wing of the GOP represented by young people are, in the world post-Rove, locked in a Faustian pact with the Republican nutters they meet on the street, forcing the party to the far right, and the Christian right at that, on every issue. NYC schools eye math tests for kindergartners

NYC schools eye math tests for kindergartners

The city is asking public school principals to consider giving math tests to kindergartners, a proposal that comes amid debate over the growing use of standardized tests nationwide.

The experiment could involve tests as long as 90 minutes and change reading assessments for kindergartners through second-graders in the nation's biggest school system, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration has embraced testing. The approach dismays some parents and educators who see it as mechanizing education.

Should Your Child Wait to Enter Kindergarten?

New research suggests that holding kids back a year before kindergarten because of late summer birthdays has questionable benefits.

E-textbooks may not be cheaper than printed ones, report says

E-textbooks may not be cheaper than printed ones, report says
Researchers find that since students can re-sell printed books, the price is roughly the same, and that expiration dates on e-texts make them a less viable alternative for some students.

Over the past year, seemingly everyone from Congress to the California auditor have decried college textbook costs, which have soared to an average of $700 to $1,000 per student each year. Many of these critics have pointed to online digital textbooks, which typically sell for half the price of print editions, as an affordable alternative.

Net watchers will be looking closely to see if Knol grows at the same pace and to the same scope as Wikipedia. ____JH
_____

The Knol site has one goal: to help you share what you know.

"The Knol project is a site that hosts many knols — units of knowledge — written about various subjects. The authors of the knols can take credit for their writing, provide credentials, and elicit peer reviews and comments. Users can provide feedback, comments, related information. So the Knol project is a platform for sharing information, with multiple cues that help you evaluate the quality and veracity of information.

Knols are indexed by the big search engines, of course. And well-written knols become popular the same as regular web pages. The Knol site allows anyone to write and manage knols through a browser on any computer."

It’s that time again—the annual moving-into-the-dorms rite of passage for college freshmen. Somewhere along the line, academic and social concerns went by the wayside as the foremest contributors of butterflies in the bellies of brand spankin’ new college students. These days, the principal worry is having a big enough pile of plastic crap for the picture-perfect version of dorm living.

It probably needs to be color-coordinated as well (because god knows no one wants to end up with the orange closet organizer, the pink Mac, the green fridge, the purple hamper, the red desktop organizer, the red bean bag chair and the blue shower caddy).

If you need a second curmudgeonly opinion, read the excellent rant on Around the Academy.

If you need some inspiration for frugality and the reduction of crap in the world, watch this non-preachy and tolerable video: The Story of Stuff. I generally loathe informational videos and documentaries (excepting, as always, Dogtown and Z-Boys) and this was totally watchable.

Please feel free to read the Reuters article on how much money parents pay every school year on questionably necessary school supplies.

What Do You Know About Bankruptcy?
Bankcruptcy is a word that immediately brings a negative vision to our minds. It happens everywhere in the world and is not partial to a certain country, race or nationality. In Malaysia, the total number of bankruptcy cases nationwide has risen from 70,009 in 1999 to 106,000 in 2003 and today the figure stands at 160,000. Bankruptcy law exists to help both the bankrupt and the creditor. It will stop the creditor from harassing the debtor and it safeguards the rights of both parties. What is Ba

An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube

This informative and provocative video contains a Library of Congress presentation by Dr. Michael Wesch, a cultural anthropologist at Kansas State University, who explores the digital ethnography of YouTube. Wesch and his students conduct their research using "participant observation" on YouTube. Wesch makes very effective use of XML, screen captures, music, pictures, re-mixing, and video presentation techniques to convey his analyses of the cultural significance of Web 2.0 media trends. Wesch's work is a fine example of using a medium to explain a medium--something like Marshall McCluhan using Television to explain the impact of TV on society. See Wesch's other videos, "The Machine is Us/ing Us" and "Information R/evolution," and consult Mediated Cultures for updates about the Digital Ethnography Working Group's studies. ____JH (Thanks to iThinkEd and openculture for citations of Wesch's work.)

In short, for every learning problem (or issue) we have today, there is probably a free tool out there that enables us to solve it. If not, I am pretty sure some genius out there is constructing it right now. If no one is doing it, perhaps we can do it.

Another challenge is to integrate all our learning tools efficiently and effectively into our learning spaces. On the positive note, more and more tools are creating integration modules to widely used systems like Moodle and Facebook, so it might not be so difficult after all. Also, with OpenID we can increasingly login to all our favorite websites without much hassle. Single-login to all our learning tools! Now that is something we all can appreciate! Remember one password! Tough one!

The Reality of Education in the U.S.

A recent online teacher poll of the week asked: Do you feel
appreciated by your students? Yes 60.0% No 40.0% There were
a total of 435 votes. Only 60 percent of the 435 teachers
believed they are appreciated by their students. Perhaps it
is because so many of our students today have a bad
attitude about the classroom.

The most recent U.S. Census Bureau says that about 33
percent of women in the United States that are of the ages
between aged 25 to 29 had a bachelor's degree or more
education in 2007. This was compared with 26 percent of
their male counterparts.

In a report called the Educational Attainment in the United
States: 2007, it was clearly stated that among adults 25
and older, men remain slightly more likely than women to
hold a bachelor's degree at 30 percent compared to 28
percent. The percentage for women rose between 2006 and
2007 up from 27 percent, but for men, it remained
statistically unchanged.

It would appear from research that more education continues
to pay off as adults with advanced degrees typically earn
four times more than those with less than a high school
diploma.

The report also shows that in 2007, 86 percent of all
adults who were 25 years and older said that they had
completed at least high school; 29 percent had bachelor's
degree. More than half of Asians 25 and older had a
bachelor's degree or more (52 percent), compared with 32
percent of non-Hispanic whites, 19 percent of blacks and 13
percent of Hispanic adults.

The proportion of the foreign-born population with a
bachelor's degree or more was 28 percent, compared with 29
percent of the native population. However, the proportion
of naturalized citizens with a college degree was 34
percent.

Workers 18 and older with a bachelor's degree earned an
average of $56,788 in 2006, while those with a high school
diploma earned $31,071.

Among those whose highest level of education was a high
school diploma or equivalent, non-Hispanic white workers
had the highest average earnings at $32,931, followed by
Asians at $29,426 and blacks who made $26,268. Average
earnings of Hispanic workers in the same group was $27,508.

Among workers with advanced degrees, Asians made $88,408
and non-Hispanic whites made $83,785, higher average
earnings than Hispanics at $70,432 and blacks at $64,834).

Statistics also prove that as outside groups gets involved
in a child's life, assisting with their schoolwork, or
family issues, there is a much greater appreciation for
school, education and teachers as well.
